Energy bills are expected to rise by 42 per cent annually - and could reach £5,000 within the next decade

Energy bills will soar to more than £5,000 a year within the next decade, experts warned last night.

Prices are expected to rise by 42 per cent annually forcing thousands of families into fuel poverty.

Analysists at uSwitch.com said that the average annual bills have doubled from £580 five years ago to £1,243 today.

By 2020 they are expected to quadruple as Britain increasingly relies on outdated infrastructure and green energy policies.

Last night experts warned that we were entering a ‘new era’ of high cost fuel charges.

Ann Robinson policy director at uSwitch.com said:

‘The fact is we are entering a new era of high-cost energy and households will have to adapt their behaviour accordingly.’

Millions of pounds are needed for energy firms to modernise their outdated pipes and storage systems and provide households with smart metering technology.

There is also pressure for them to invest in ‘green’ energy

Michelle Mitchell, charity director for Age Concern and Help the Aged, said: ‘With more than one in three pensioner households already in fuel poverty, any further price rises could have serious consequences.’

Families behind with water bills could have flow reduced to just a trickle

Daily Mail

By Sean Poulter

Running out of time: Tap water could be cut to a trickle if families fall behind with their bills under a crackdown proposed by industry giants

Families who don’t pay their water bills could have the supply to their homes cut to a trickle.

The proposal, designed to force defaulting customers to pay up, copies a scheme used in Australia and has been put forward by Thames Water at a time when the industry wants to raise bills at above inflation for years to come.

Other suppliers are likely to support the idea from Britain’s biggest water company for restricting supplies.

Thames, which is majority-owned by an Australian bank and yesterday revealed a 4 per cent rise in annual profits to £435.1million in the year to March, called it a ‘last resort’ against a hardcore of customers who refuse to pay their bills and said each case would require a court order.

But the Consumer Council for Water, the official customer body, claims the measure could hit poorer families who simply cannot afford to pay.

The water industry wants inflation-busting increases in charges over the next five years.

In some parts of the country bills could rise by as much as 45 per cent in cash terms between 2010 and 2015. Customers of South West Water who do not have a meter could see the average bill rise from £755 to around £1,100 once inflation is added to the equation.

Increases of this size would make it increasingly difficult for customers to keep up their payments, leaving them open to sanctions such as the proposed cap on water flow.

A decision on the scale of water and sewerage bill increases will be made later this year by industry regulator Ofwat.

It is illegal to cut off a household which is behind with its bill because water is considered an essential, both to drink and for hygiene.

However, Thames says it wants the option of restricting the flow to allow it to take action against customers who choose not to pay, rather than those who cannot afford to pay. It has detailed the proposal in a letter to MPs investigating water management on the Commons environment select committee.

It would be achieved by fitting a trickle flow meter restricting the mains supply into a house.

Using bull to out-cost small independent farming

The article below does two things. Promotes acceptance of genetic engineering of animals as they are “imperfect” and not “efficient” enough (to the likings of some people with certain personality traits). The article also promotes the ridiculous idea that farming is endangering the planet by hyping up the natural methane emissions by bodies. With small to medium family farms closing because of ridiculous regulations new regulations and costs for these perceived ‘threats’ will not help them or our wallets at the supermarket. Ideas being ridiculous has never stopped any before when an agenda and a lot of money is behind it. The one benefiting from it being corporation farming rather than ‘inefficient’ small family farming. The article says farts and burps (methane emissions) are 20 times more ’scary’ than exhaling (CO2): “most of the gas comes from bovine burps, which are 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide”.

If a decent percentage of the non-farming public (who even care) are lead to agree then laws can be passed without too much protests. There are a lot of people who do believe that today’s CO2 levels are too high and they also believe this will cause disaster despite the Cretaceous era having over five times higher CO2 levels allowing the creatures of that time a lush green environment to feed on. The warmer climate in England a few hundred years ago allowed people to have vineyards. The article below fits in with the United Nations Agenda 21 treaty adopted by 178 governments and their local councils.

Cows bred to burp less will help reduce potent greenhouse gas and tackle global warming

A prototype cow which burps less is being bred in a breakthrough that could reduce a big source of the greenhouse gases responsible for global warming.

The farm animals are responsible for nearly three-quarters of total methane emissions.

Most of the gas comes from bovine burps, which are 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas.

Stephen Moore, a professor at the University of Alberta in Canada, is examining the genes responsible for methane produced from the animal’s four stomachs in order to breed more efficient, environmentally friendly cows.

breed efficient animals that produce 25 per cent less methane than less efficient animals.

‘We are working on producing diagnostic markers (clues to medical causes) for efficient animals,’ said Moore.

‘We are looking at the next generation of technologies that will enable us to determine the genetics of an animal through a blood test or testing some hairs that you might pluck from the animal.’

Farmers could shrink their cattle’s ecological footprint by breeding cows that grow faster, so reducing the time spent standing in fields. Cattle could also be bred to become more efficient in converting feed into muscle and producing less methane and waste, said Moore.
